Cape Ingolfshofdi is an isolated headland on the coast half way between Skaftafell in Vatnajokull National Park and Jökulsárlón ice lagoon. This historical nature reserve is home of thousands of nesting seabirds, like puffins and great skuas. The cape is named after the first settler of Iceland, Ingolfur Arnarson, who spent his first winter in Iceland there in the year 874 AD.
To get to Ingólfshöfði we cross 6 km of waters, marshes and sands in a tractor-drawn hay cart. The drive takes about 25 minutes each way, so we spend about 1 1/2 hour hiking around the cape. The circle we hike around the nature reserve is 2-3 km long. In the beginning we need to walk up a steep sand slope, and then through rocky terrain, but then it gets more easy, mostly hiking on flat grass land and we make many stops along the way. We don't recommend that people participate in this trip unless they can do this hike.

Be careful to bring good outdoor clothing for this trip, the area is exposed to winds and rain, and sometimes sand storms. Perfect trip to try out your gore-tex outfit and gloves and hats, but on the other hand, sometimes it is possible to wear shorts and t-shirts on the trip. The Icelandic weather is included in the Ingólfshöfði Puffin Tour :-)
About booking young children!
Of course children younger than 5 year old are welcome on the tour, and if you have Baby Carrier that makes it possible to carry your
baby on your back or against your chest, small babies might even be doing better than 3-4 year old that are too big to carry.
We don't recommend to book online with very young children, in case that the weather is challenging at the time of departure. It would not be fair for other clients, if we are forced to cut the trip short because of children that are wet and cold and crying about going home :-)
However, we have a solution. The remaining members of the party book their trip online, but you don't book the young children and one parent. We will guarantee that there will be space for the one adult parent that is not booked, so if the weather is good the one person that is unbooked, and the small child(s) will be able to go for sure. Of course the young children will go free also. However, if the weather is not good enough, that one parent simply stays at your car while the rest of the party do the 2 1/2 hour trip.
We do sell the tickets at Ingólfshöfði Check in Hut from 45 minutes prior to departure. You can pay with card or cash there.
