Einar Rúnar Sigurðsson, lead guide of Öræfaferðir - From Coast To Mountains was the first mountain guide in Iceland to offer daily ice cave tours, starting in winter 2006-7. He is also the country's oldest mountain guide in working years to offer glacier and climbing and ski mountaineering tours in Iceland, since he started his company in spring 1994. Einar has AIMG (ASSOCIATION OF ICELANDIC MOUNTAIN GUIDES) degree of Hard Ice 3 and Ice Cave Guide.
We will drive and hike through part of Vatnajökull National Park and the area is rich with history and and interesting landscape that has changed dramatically due to climate change through the centuries.
The focus of the tour is of course to explore an ice cave. Since we only book one trip per day we will have plenty of time, but there might be that several groups from other companies are visiting the same ice cave on that day, so how much time we have inside will have to depend on that.
Important!
Be careful to bring good outdoor clothing for this trip and hiking boots that would keep your feet dry walking in rain or in deep snow. The hiking boots have to support the ankle since we walk on glacier crampons big part of the way. (We have some for rent if needed).
Bring down jacket or Icelandic wool sweater or similar that you can wear underneath the gore tex layer in case of the worst weather situation. Bring simple hat that is possible to wear underneath the helmet, and warm gloves. Bring a backpack with snacks and a water bottle, and your extra clothing.
