Fjallaskíðakeppni á Hvannadalshnúk
Kæru verðandi fjallaskíðakeppendur. Ég biðst forláts á að síðan er á ensku, en þar sem ég veit að stór hluti fjallaleiðsögumanna á svæðinu eru af erlendu bergi brotnir þá ákvað ég að hafa þetta svona :-) Einar Öræfingur

Info and Details
For safety all contestants have to wear a helmet and climbing harness as well as avalanche beeper and a spade and a probe. Each contestant must have a GPS unit (and the knowledge and training of using the GPS to backtrack back down the mountain in case of bad visibility) that will track his/her route all the way up and down. Fully charged GSM or radio is also required for safety measure.
Skis must be used all the way up the glacier (from 1100 meters and back down the glacier to 1100 meters. Ski crampons are highly recommended since hiking alone without the skis on the glacier is not recommended at all due to crevasse risk. Usually the peak is climbable on ski crampons in early April.
ÖRÆFAFERÐIR - FromCoastToMountains are hosting the contest 2019 and will provide the third price, and now Garminbúðin - Garmin.is have generously stepped in to provide the 1st and second price so we could make the contest free of charge.
We had someone go to the top few days before the contest to place a pole there with some special markings, and each contestant needed to take a photograph with his/her phone of that pole the moment they arrive on the top. Then we could both see the time it took to the top and have a proof that they found the top :-)
You better prepare for that this contest will take place even if the weather and visibility is not optimal at the time. In the end, this might be a contest of navigation and knowing and using the right equipment for pretty demanding weather conditions so keep that in mind when you register.
Don't miss the great race in Siglufjörður in mid May either:
That race would be more suited for everyone, Hvannadalshnúkur Speed Contest is only for expert mountaineers and mountain guides.
The winners of the first Hvannadalshnúkur Speed Contest on 6th of April 2019. From left to right; third place Rögnvaldur Finnbogason with the total time 4 hours 42 minutes, first place Marek Čavojský with the time 4 hours 12 mintues, and finally Einar Rúnar Sigurðsson with 4 hours 30 minutes.
